This is a career exploration workshop for students in the middle and high school grades or early college to discover careers related to therapeutic drug manufacturing in the Life Science industry of Southern California. There will be a series of four workshops.

Speaker Bios – November
Debra Hammill, Moderator
Co-vice Chair, YWIB-Southern California Discovery Workshop series
Jolene Lau, Ferring Pharmaceuticals
Jolene provides scientific and competitive intelligence to drug discovery teams at Ferring, supporting colleagues across multiple therapeutic areas. She earned BS and PhD degrees in chemistry, has conducted research in nanotechnology and chemical biology, and previously worked as an analyst at a pharma intelligence database company. In her free time, she cooks, crafts, gardens, and plays strategy board games.
Alexa Tralla, Illumina
Alexa has worked for 10 years in the life science sector. For eight years she worked in the life science consulting space including four years in Ireland where she opened an office and worked on various business development and project management initiatives with the likes of Pfizer, GSK, JnJ, Novartis, and others. Alexa joined Illumina two years ago and has been working in Inside Sales including the strategic account LabCorp. Prior to Illumina, Alexa recently got a new role as the Program Manager, Commercialization Excellence where she is working on commercial initiatives through all stages of product launch. She has a passion for incorporating both Voice of Customer and Voice of Field into her projects.
Alex has lived in San Diego for the past three years, having been born in Colorado and lived in such diverse locations as LA, San Francisco, Denver, and Ireland. Alexa obtained her bachelor’s degree in global business from the University of Southern California, and in her free time, she enjoys exploring the outdoors and participating in outdoor activities such as golf, skiing, and scuba diving. Alexa loves to travel, she enjoys art and museums, and she’s a self-proclaimed “foodie”.
Alexa serves on the executive teams for both the [email protected] Network (WIN) and Illumina iCares. Outside of Illumina, she is Vice Chair Emeritus for Women In Bio Southern California.
Jennifer Overklift, Student at University of California Santa Cruz
Jennifer was born and raised in San Diego and recently moved to Santa Cruz to pursue a degree in Environmental Science at the University of California Santa Cruz. She plans to obtain a career as a field scientist or a scientific journalist. Some of her hobbies include reading, hiking, and swimming.
