Medical Education: The Future of Inclusive Dermatology
October 7, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
There is a current lack of representation of Black patients and skin colors in medical education materials, where White males are usually the norm, leading to students at medical schools being taught to identify symptoms of disease predominantly in White patients, potentially contributing to health disparities.
The education of future dermatologists and skin health experts can have a profound impact on mitigating or exacerbating disparities in care and treatment for Black patients. In addition to more Black students graduating and building careers in dermatology, a profound mainstreaming of the knowledge and skills to identify and address skin health needs of Black patients is needed across the entire dermatology medical discipline. This could go a long way in ensuring that dermatologists, whether Black, White, Brown or other, can provide the best quality of care to patients regardless of their skin color.
Join our panel of medical education leaders, students, and Black skin health experts to discuss potential solutions to address these challenges.
