Is it All Genetic? The Role of Biology and Driver Genes in Childhood Cancer

Approximately 300,000 children from infancy to age 14 are diagnosed with cancer worldwide every year [1]. Although cure rates for some pediatric cancers have increased to about 80% in recent decades, cancer is still the leading cause of death by disease in the developed world among children over one year of age.

While much less is known about the cause of childhood cancers than that of adult cancers, we do know that various genomic and epigenomic alterations play an important role [2-3]. Pediatric cancers arise mostly from somatic mutations in cancer driver genes, yet 5-10% have a hereditary basis due to rare genetic disorders [4-5].

Join us November 5 to hear experts in this field discuss work being done to more deeply understand the gene-disease relationship of childhood cancers, the development of novel strategies and therapeutics that target pediatric-specific driver genes, and how bedside, rapid tumor genetic testing can improve identification at diagnosis and relapse.
